Banki: A herd of 21 elephants has returned to the Dampaḍa Wildlife Sanctuary after creating disturbance for several days in the Sukasan forest area of Athagarh in Odisha.
While the elephant herd was crossing the road during its return, traffic was disrupted for over an hour, leading to a long traffic jam on the stretch.
It has been alleged that while moving back from Athagarh, the elephant herd caused extensive damage to paddy and vegetable crops in the Anandapur area under Banki block. Farmers have expressed concern over the crop loss.
On Thursday morning, the elephants were also seen bathing in the Mahanadi river, drawing the attention of locals.
After receiving information, forest department officials reached the area and are closely monitoring the movement of the elephant herd to avoid any untoward incident. Locals have been advised to remain alert. Further details are awaited.
