Bhubaneswar, December 27: Biju Janata Dal (BJD) president and Leader of Opposition Naveen Patnaik on Friday announced the new team for the party's Kandhamal district committee. The decision is aimed at strengthening the organisational base of the party and infusing fresh energy among workers at the grassroots level ahead of future political challenges.
Senior leader Radhamohan Mahapatra has been appointed as the General Secretary of the Kandhamal district BJD unit.
The announcement has generated enthusiasm among party workers and leaders in the district. Radhamohan Mahapatra, a long-time dedicated member of the party, enjoys considerable popularity among local cadres and supporters. Party sources said his appointment is expected to further consolidate the BJD's position in the region.
Kandhamal has always been a strategically important district for the BJD, with a significant tribal population and diverse communities. The new committee is likely to focus on deepening public outreach, addressing local issues, and highlighting concerns of the people more effectively.
In recent months, Naveen Patnaik has been emphasising organisational restructuring across the state. Following the party's setback in the 2024 elections, the BJD, now in opposition, is working to reinforce its role as a strong voice for the people of Odisha. Appointing new leadership at the district level is part of this broader strategy to energise workers and rebuild connections with the masses.
Issues such as Maoist activities, tribal rights, forest land disputes, and development projects have remained key concerns in Kandhamal. The BJD has consistently raised these matters in the past, and the new team under Radhamohan Mahapatra is expected to pursue them more vigorously.
Party workers in Kandhamal have warmly welcomed the appointment of Radhamohan Mahapatra, describing him as a seasoned and committed leader. Under his leadership, the district unit is likely to witness renewed activity, with increased focus on public contact programmes and organisational meetings.
Naveen Patnaik's decision has injected fresh vigour into the party ranks. Sources indicate that the BJD will continue such restructuring efforts to maintain its identity as Odisha's leading regional force. The announcement has sparked widespread discussions in political circles in Kandhamal.
