Angul: A three-day crocodile census has commenced today in the Satkosia gorge of the Mahanadi River in Angul district of Odisha. The census involves 14 teams from three forest divisions – Satkosia, Athamallik, and Mahanadi – comprising around 50 forest officials and research fellows.

As per information received, the census involves 14 teams from three forest divisions – Satkosia, Athamallik, and Mahanadi – comprising around 50 forest officials and research fellows.

Besides, to minimize disturbance to the crocodiles’ natural habitat, the teams are using wooden country boats instead of motor-propelled boats. This approach ensures that the crocodiles are counted without disrupting their movement.

According to last year’s data, the Satkosia gorge was home to 97 mugger crocodiles and 18 gharial crocodiles. The census aims to provide an updated count and insights into the conservation status of these reptiles in the region.
