Phulbani, March 31: In a tragic incident stemming from a prolonged family dispute, a married man from Na Hani village under Firingia police station limits in Kandhamal district allegedly committed suicide by hanging late on Saturday night.
The deceased, identified as Rajiv (full name not specified in initial reports), was reportedly caught in a bitter conflict between his first and second wives. According to police and family sources, Rajiv was already married when he entered into a physical relationship with another woman. He later granted recognition to the second woman as his wife, leading to ongoing quarrels and tension in the household.
The situation escalated recently when his first wife lodged a complaint against him at Firingia police station. Police summoned Rajiv for questioning, after which he began staying with his second wife.
On Saturday night, after family members had gone to sleep, Rajiv allegedly lost his mental balance and hanged himself using a rope in the late hours. The second wife's family members informed the police in the morning upon discovering the body.
Firingia police have registered a case of unnatural death (Case No. 5/2026) and reached the spot. The body was seized and sent for post-mortem examination.
Speaking to reporters, Firingia Police Station Officer-in-Charge Muralidhar Sahu confirmed the details of the incident and the ongoing investigation.
The case highlights the personal and legal complications arising from bigamy and domestic discord in the region. Police are questioning family members to understand the full circumstances leading to the suicide.
