Bolangir: In a shocking incident, an Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM) was burnt to death in her house in Ramchandrapur under Deogaon police station in Odisha’s Bolangir district on Wednesday. The ANM worker’s husband has also received severe burn injuries while trying to rescue her.
The deceased has been identified as Damayanti Barik, who had been working as an ANM for the past twenty years.
According to sources, the health worker was sleeping when her body caught fire due to unknown reason. Her husband got half-burnt as he tried to rescue his wife. He was found screaming in pain due to burn injuries, following which locals alerted the police.
The critically injured man was initially admitted to the hospital and is now being shifted to Bolangir Bhimabhoi hospital for further treatment. Both individuals are reported to be natives of Sundargarh district.
Authorities have stated that it is not yet clear whether the case involves murder or suicide. A detailed investigation is currently underway to ascertain the exact sequence of events. A forensic team is expected to reach the spot to carry out further examination of the evidence.
