“Tigers” Roam Freely in Phulbani Streets During Maa Narayani Yatra

For the past few days, Phulbani town has been witnessing a unique sight — “tigers” roaming through its streets, lanes, and markets. From Sahi and Galli to Kandhi areas and even inside local markets, these tigers are moving fearlessly from house to house.

At first glance, children and elderly residents

get scared upon seeing the tigers. However, these are not wild animals from the forest, but devotees in tiger costumes.

These tiger performers, known locally as “Manasik Dhari,” take a vow to dress as tigers during the Maa Narayani Yatra to fulfill personal or family wishes after their prayers are answered. The bi-annual Maa Narayani Yatra provides them the platform to express their gratitude.

With the ongoing 27th Maa Narayani Yatra in full swing, groups of tiger dancers can be seen every day dancing to the beats of traditional instruments as they move through different neighbourhoods and markets of Phulbani. Large crowds gather to enjoy the energetic tiger dance performances.

This colourful and vibrant tradition has become a major attraction of the famous Narayani Yatra in Phulbani.
