Bhadrak: A local court on Monday sentenced a man to life imprisonment for the brutal murder of his wife and their minor son in Bhadrak district in February 2018.
Additional District and Sessions Judge Prabhat Kumar Rajguru awarded life imprisonment to Abhaya Majhi alias Kalia of Sahapur village under Dhusuri police limits after convicting him in the double murder case.
According to the prosecution, Majhi had married Padmabati of Nandapur village under the same police station limits in 2012. The couple had two children.
Majhi was working with a private company in Chennai when he lost one of his palms in a machine accident. He received Rs 4.5 lakh as compensation and returned home as he could no longer continue working.
On February 24, 2018, a dispute erupted between Majhi and his wife over household expenses. In a fit of rage, Majhi allegedly strangled Padmabati with a plastic rope. When their minor son, Jiban Majhi, began crying, he strangled the child as well.
To conceal the crime, Majhi dug a pit inside the bedroom of his house and buried the bodies of his wife and son on the same night.
Six days later, he took his daughter to his in-laws’ house and claimed that his wife had left home without informing anyone. Suspecting foul play, Padmabati’s father lodged a complaint at Dhusuri police station.
Police registered a case and launched an investigation. During interrogation, Majhi confessed to the crime in the presence of a magistrate.
The court held Majhi guilty based on the evidence presented by the prosecution and sentenced him to life imprisonment.
