Puri: The body of a 24-year-old fisherman, who had gone missing after being swept away by the strong current of the Daya River in Puri district, was recovered on Saturday after an intensive 24-hour search operation.
The deceased was identified as Dibana Behera of Jagulaipada village under Kanas block. His decomposed body was recovered from the river near the bridge at Jagulaipada by Fire Services personnel, bringing an end to the prolonged search.
According to reports, Dibana had gone fishing in the Daya River with his father on Friday. While the two were returning home after fishing, Dibana was suddenly swept away by the river’s strong current in full view of his father. Despite desperate attempts to rescue him, the powerful flow of the river made it impossible to save him.
After receiving information about the incident, Fire Services personnel launched a search and rescue operation. Two fire brigade teams conducted an extensive search of the river continuously for nearly 24 hours before recovering the body on Saturday.
The incident has cast a shadow of grief over Jagulaipada village. Family members said Dibana had been married only a few days ago, and his wife is pregnant. His death has left his elderly parents devastated, as he was the family’s sole breadwinner.
The body was sent for post-mortem examination, while police have initiated further proceedings.
