Puri: The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) gave a 48-hour ultimatum to the Odisha government and police to arrest the accused persons involved in the Balanga shocker. The conch party gave the ultimatum while protesting infront of Balanga police station in Puri district today.
Hundreds of BJD workers and leaders under the leadership of party’s Puri district president Umakanta Samantaray held a protest rally and were attempting to gherao the Balanga Police Station. However, they were intercepted by the cops, following which they staged a demonstration infront of the police station. Raising slogans against the Mohan Majhi-led Odisha government and demanding justice for the minor burn victim, the protesters burnt the effigies of Chief Minister, Deputy Chief Minister Pravati Parida and Higher Education Minister Suryabanshi Suraj. They also submitted a memorandum addressing Odisha Governor Hari Babu Kambhampati seeking his intervention in the matter and informing about the rising number of crimes against women and girls in the state. The BJD leaders further said that while the BJP government has completely failed to protect the women of the state, the police are working as directed by the saffron party leaders. As the police is clueless of the accused even after 34 hours after occurrence of the crime, they also threatened to block the Puri-Bhubaneswar National Highway if police fails to identify and arrest all the accused persons within 48 hours. Rajashree Mallick, Lekhashree Samanta Singhar, Tukuni Sahu, Pradeep Majhi, Subhashish Khuntia, Rudra Pratap Maharathy were among many prominent leaders of the conch party who took part in the protest rally today. Meanwhile, DGP Y.B Khurania visited the spot of the crime along with senior police officers including Inspector General of Police (IGP) of Central Range Praveen Kumar and Puri Superintendent of Police (SP) Pinak Mishra and carried out an investigation into the matter. “Physical evidences have been collected by two forensic teams, i.e the State forensic team and forensic team of AIIMS Bhubaneswar. We have received some information and are probing further to collect more. As the investigation is in a sensitive stage, we have taken it very seriously and will further brief you (media person) later,” he said while speaking to the newsmen. Notably, the minor girl was set ablaze by three youths for some unknown reason at around 8.30 AM yesterday, following which she sustained over 70 percent of burns on her body. After undergoing treatment at AIIMS, Bhubaneswar, since yesterday, the girl was shifted AIIMS, Delhi for further medication.
