Jagatsinghpur: An inmate of a drug rehabilitation centre in Jagatsinghpur district was found dead under suspicious circumstances on Saturday, prompting police to launch an investigation following allegations of physical torture by his family members.
The deceased was identified as Anurodh Lenka of Nagapur village in Koraput district.
According to family members, Lenka fell seriously ill and died while being taken to a hospital from the Drug Rehabilitation Centre. His relatives alleged that he had been subjected to physical torture at the facility, leading to his death.
The incident triggered outrage among family members and local residents, who demanded strict action against those responsible and a thorough probe into the matter.
Abinash Lenka, the deceased’s son, claimed there were injury marks and wounds on his father’s body.
Following the incident, Sadar police in Jagatsinghpur registered a case and detained the owner of the rehabilitation centre for questioning.
Police said an investigation is underway into the circumstances surrounding the death, including allegations of negligence and mistreatment at the centre.
