Bhubaneswar: A depression has formed over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining areas along the Odisha-West Bengal coasts, with the weather system likely to intensify further into a deep depression during the next 24 hours, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said on Sunday.

The depression was centred at 8:30 am IST on July 26, 2026, over the same region near latitude 20.6°N and longitude 88.4°E, about 130 km south-southeast of Sagar Island in West Bengal, 140 km southeast of Digha, 170 km east of Chandbali in Odisha, and 180 km east-southeast of Baleshwar in Odisha.
According to the IMD, the system is likely to move northwestwards and cross the North Odisha and West Bengal coasts between Paradip and Sagar Island around the forenoon or noon of July 27.
The depression has developed from a well-marked low-pressure area that persisted over the northwest Bay of Bengal. The system gained strength under favourable atmospheric conditions and is expected to intensify further while moving closer to the coast.
Several districts of Odisha are likely to experience rainfall activity as the system approaches. Coastal and adjoining areas may witness intense spells of rain, with localised heavy to very heavy rainfall possible at some places.
The IMD said further updates on the movement and intensity of the system will be issued as the depression progresses towards the coast.
