Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department has predicted thunderstorm activity with lightning and gusty surface winds over parts of Odisha for the next five days, starting July 8.
According to the IMD bulletin, Day 1 valid up to 8:30 AM IST of July 8, 2026, has no warning issued for any district in the state.
From Day 2, isolated thunderstorm activity is likely to return. For the period from 8:30 AM of July 8 to 8:30 AM of July 9, the IMD has issued a yellow warning for Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts. The weather office said thunderstorm accompanied with lightning and gusty surface wind with wind speed reaching up to 30-40 kmph is very likely at one or two places in these districts.
The same conditions are expected to continue on Day 3 and Day 4. Between 8:30 AM of July 9 and 8:30 AM of July 11, Angul, Dhenkanal, Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts will remain under a yellow alert. The IMD has advised people to be aware of the possibility of lightning and sudden wind gusts during this period.
On Day 5, valid from 8:30 AM of July 11 to 8:30 AM of July 12, the alert zone will again narrow down to Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj. Thunderstorms with lightning and wind speed of 30-40 kmph are likely at isolated places in these two northern districts. The IMD has asked residents in the warned districts to avoid open areas during thunderstorms and to take necessary precautions.
