Bhubaneswar: Odisha is likely to receive light to moderate rain or thundershowers at a few places over all districts during the next 24 hours, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issuing a yellow warning for heavy rainfall in three districts.
Heavy rainfall is likely at one or two places in Baleshwar, Kendujhar and Mayurbhanj districts, the IMD said in its midday weather bulletin issued on Monday.
Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty surface winds, with wind speeds reaching 30-40 kmph, are also likely at one or two places in Baleshwar, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapada, Jagatsinghpur, Kataka, Sundaragada, Debagada, Kendujhar, Mayurbhanj, Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Khordha and Nayagada.
The weather system over the region includes an upper-air cyclonic circulation over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north Odisha and West Bengal coasts between 1.5 km and 3.1 km above mean sea level. The monsoon trough also extends through Odisha towards the northwest Bay of Bengal.
The IMD said light to moderate rainfall occurred at a few places in Odisha during the 24 hours ending at 8.30 am on Monday, while heavy rainfall was recorded at one or two places in Kandhamal, Puri and Jagatsinghpur. Phulbani recorded the highest rainfall of 10 cm, followed by Kakatpur at 9 cm and Balikuda at 7 cm.
For September 15-16, light to moderate rain or thundershowers are likely at a few places across the state, with a yellow warning for thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds in several districts. No warning has been issued for September 16-18, while heavy rainfall warnings have been forecast for different districts later in the week.
In Bhubaneswar, partly cloudy skies with the possibility of rain or thunderstorms are expected over the next 24 hours. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to remain around 33 degrees Celsius and 25 degrees Celsius, respectively.
