NHRC Seeks Report On Alleged Custodial Death In Ganjam

Bhubaneswar: The National Human Rights Commission has sought a detailed report from the Ganjam District Collector and Superintendent of Police regarding the alleged custodial death of a youth in a police station in the district.

The Commission acted on a complaint filed on May 31 and June 1, 2026. The complaint alleged that Sahu died due to police torture while in custody at Kabisuryanagar police station. Based on the complaint, the NHRC registered a case.

It has initiated an inquiry into the matter.  In its directive, the NHRC asked officials to submit comprehensive details. This includes the post mortem report. It also includes the FIR copy. The site inspection report must be submitted. The cause of death must be stated. Any available CCTV footage from the lock up is also required.

The NHRC also sought information on whether a magisterial inquiry was conducted after the death. The Commission emphasised that the investigation will determine whether police excesses led to the death.

A specific timeline has been set for submitting the report.  The incident triggered widespread  outrage. Family members and residents have accused police of custodial torture. Social activists later lodged a formal complaint with the NHRC.
