Bhubaneswar: Odisha Vigilance on Saturday arrested an Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) posted at Jarapada Police Station in Angul district for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 8,000 from a complainant to settle a case.
According to an official press release, the accused ASI, identified as Sita Nayak, was the investigating officer in a case registered at Jarapada Police Station. She had allegedly demanded Rs 10,000 from the complainant to facilitate a compromise settlement between the complainant and the opposite party.
When the complainant expressed an inability to pay the demanded amount, the ASI allegedly reduced the demand to Rs 8,000.
Unable to comply with the illegal demand, the complainant approached Odisha Vigilance authorities and lodged a complaint.
Following verification, a Vigilance team laid a trap and apprehended the ASI inside the premises of Jarapada Police Station while she was allegedly accepting the bribe amount of Rs 8,000.
The entire bribe amount of Rs 8,000 was recovered and seized from her possession.
Following the trap, simultaneous searches are being carried out at two locations linked to the accused ASI to examine possible disproportionate assets.
A case has been registered at Cuttack Vigilance Police Station under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018.
