Bhubaneswar: Eight inmates have reportedly tested HIV positive in Jharpada Jail, triggering fear and concern among other prisoners.
Following the detection of the HIV cases, the jail authorities wrote to the Special POCSO Court and the Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) urging the latter to provide special medical attention and care to the affected prisoners.
The issue came to light after a rape accused, recently produced in court by Mahila Police Station, was found to be HIV positive. The authorities raised concerns that other inmates could get infected through close contact, especially during common activities like group shaving. The concerned authorities have appealed to take necessary precautions so that other prisoners do not come into contact with the infected prisoners in a manner that risks transmission.
An investigation into the matter was in progress and authorities were yet to provide further details.
