Monsoon Fury: Schools Shut In Six Districts Today As Heavy Rain Lashes Western Odisha

Bhubaneswar: In view of the relentless rain caused by the prevailing low-pressure system and inclement weather conditions, the Odisha government has announced a holiday for all schools in six districts on Monday.

The districts where schools have been declared closed are: Nuapada, Kandhamal, Boudh, Sambalpur, Balangir, and Subarnapur.

The District Collector of Subarnapur ordered the closure of all schools and colleges in the district due to the forecast of very heavy rainfall.

Similarly, the Boudh District Collector declared a holiday for all schools, colleges, and Anganwadi centres for the day. The district administration also cancelled the scheduled joint grievance hearing camp due to continuous heavy rain.

In Sambalpur, heavy to very heavy rainfall continued throughout the night, leaving many low-lying areas waterlogged. Taking stock of the situation, the District Collector declared a holiday for all schools under Sambalpur Municipal Corporation and Dhankauda block. The Collector and Municipal Commissioner conducted late-night visits to affected areas to assess the ground situation. Several localities in Sambalpur reported water entering residential houses.

Dhankauda block recorded 158.1 mm of rainfall, while the SMC New Building area in Durgapali recorded a very high 180.5 mm of rainfall in the last 24 hours.

In Subarnapur district, continuous heavy showers accompanied by thunder have led to waterlogging in low-lying areas, creating artificial flood-like situations. Water has accumulated on the road from Jayguru Chowk to the Kacheri square due to poor drainage.

The depression over south Jharkhand and north interior Odisha continues to cause widespread heavy rainfall across western and northern parts of the state for the third consecutive day.
