Bhubaneswar: In a major statewide anti-narcotics disposal drive, all seized cannabis stored at police stations across Odisha will be destroyed this year, Director General of Police (CID-CB) Vinaytosh Mishra said on Saturday.
Addressing the media, Mishra said the exercise is being carried out in a systematic manner after obtaining necessary court permissions. He noted that the accumulation of seized narcotics at police stations has been creating storage challenges and posing security risks, including theft.
“There is a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) in place for the destruction of seized narcotics. Samples are retained for evidentiary purposes, while the remaining contraband is destroyed after due legal clearance,” he said.
The DG further informed that more than 100 tonnes of seized drugs, valued at over Rs 500 crore, have already been destroyed in the recent phase of the operation. He added that the department is now seeking court approval for the destruction of an additional 200 tonnes of seized narcotics.
